During summer 2017, Apple created new app store guidelines for validation of applications. They also announced that in the future applications based on templates or app generation services would be rejected. This is considered as Apple’s way of decluttering the App Store to remove the overload of applications and clones.

This change proved controversial and led to the closure of services dedicated to application templating. It also impacted small businesses using this type of service to create their own apps. Following a series of complaints and the outcry of a US Congressman Apple has finally backed down. “Apps created from a commercialized template or app generation service will be rejected unless they are submitted directly by the provider of the app’s content.” In other words, businesses who create an app, even from a template, must subscribe to an iTunes developer account (99€/year) to submit the app. They may no longer use the services of a third-party provider.

Are Next Gen apps from Rakuten Aquafadas impacted by new app store guidelines?

Will these app store guidelines of apps created from template have an impact on Rakuten Aquafadas? What steps can be taken to prevent rejections? What are solutions for companies wishing to create their own application?

Although the applications created by our users are closely monitored by Apple, Next Gen applications of Rakuten Aquafadas are not rejected. The Next Gen template is a container app giving access to large content volume (including documents, magazines, books, etc.). Apple recommends creation of this type of container apps, which can then be customised by users for their own specific needs.

For example, a book editor will not create an app per book. They will rather build a single application for all books. Rakuten Aquafadas apps provide an access to a wide range of services. It also provides multiple customisation options: subscription, in-app purchasing, management of user accounts, contextual views by user, etc.

On the other hand our mono-document applications, containing a single document (AVE file), has started to be increasingly rejected by Apple. What other steps should be taken to prevent rejection?

Ensure that content is not purely commercial (avoid displaying prices). It’a also crucial that it includes interactive features such as videos, web-views, games or sub-documents. The editorial value of content counts within the Apple criteria.

On the contrary, Apple rejects apps which contain a simple product catalogue, digital PDF or embedded website. In the first two cases, following new app store guidelines, Apple recommends alternative solutions: creation of an eBook or just a mobile site.
