Is your 2017 eLearn strategy giving you a headache? How to take advantage of various innovative tools and train employees online?

Apparently 2016 was a transformative year for corporate learning with a significant increase in demand and adoption of digital workplace training tools. A large number of enterprises swapped old school training methods (often classroom based) and are benefitting from innovative workplace learning. Accordingly to a well-known HR magazine Workforce: “73.6% of technology-delivered training in Fortune 500 firms comes through networked, online methods.”

Other sources add: “Cisco cut its overall training costs by about 40% to 60% when it transitioned to eLearning training, while improved its overall employee performance and job effectiveness.”

2017 predictions

We’ve written about key trends in the past and we’ve just had a quick look to check which predictions became reality and which ones gained momentum. Undoubtedly: gamification, mobile centric approach and blended learning have gained strength and will remain trending topics in the industry. Also analytics will continue being popular or even a must have allowing managers to personalise the learning experience to make it even more engaging and in return more effective.

But what about predictions for the year ahead? We’re going to keep an eye on the following trends:

  • Flexibility

    One fits all approach is harder to implement in the times of increased employees mobility: 61% of workers report working outside the office at least part of the time”. It seems to us that successful training departments will have to make more efforts to deliver bespoke, on demand training available for employees when they want whether it means during business travel or when they work remotely from home or  hot-desking in one of their offices.

  • Delivery over content

    This year content will continue playing an important role (e.g. growth of interactive videos) but the key success indicator will be where and how to deliver it to learners. It will be all about using best channels in terms of: the easiest to use, the most familiar for end users and those bringing best results in terms of completion rate of learning modules. Those who will be clever enough to reuse existing programmes and focus instead on finding optimal ways to serve it to learners (e.g. via mobile devices), will win the battle!

  • User experience 

    Because it’s all about learner-centric experience, in 2017 we will all be focusing on intuitive, easy and engaging experience. Today’s employees work in a fast paced environment, use multiple information sources and have a very short attention span (think young generations of Millennials entering workforce). They want to plug and learn without too much effort and hassle in terms of logins, clunky interfaces or lengthy modules. Succinct (bite size) and well designed learning content serve them best!

And what about our partners? We asked a few of them, experts in eLearning, who deal with L&D clients on a daily basis, and here is what they think.

“The Education providers landscape might be split up in: LMSs; Content Distribution; Performance Analytics and Assessment. Assessment and Performance are related to Adaptive Learning. LMS and Content Distribution to Flipped Class. But both are dependent on Content Existence and “Findability”. That’s what we expect to be the trending demand for 2017. And what we’re excited about is the Flipped Class and Adaptive Learning possibilities. That will allow students to have their own pace and speed, and give the same opportunity for the poor and rich ones.”

They have to offer more and more features to satisfy managers and learners. Online training solutions have to be attractive, social and agile.
